In The Heights, Stage Right Trust
Project type
Musical Theatre
Date
June 2023
Location
Tauranga
In the Heights celebrates cultural identity, family, and most importantly, love as it tells the universal story of a vibrant minority community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.
Please note, this is not an original production. In The Heights is a musical with concept, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and a book by Quiara Alegria Hudes. It won four Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score, as well as a Grammy Award for the Original Broadway Cast Recording.
Produced by Stage Right Trust, Jason Te Mete was at the helm as Director, supported by Taiaroa Royal (Choreographer) and Daniel Ieremia (Musical Director).
Te Mete says of this production:
"When I was asked to direct In The Heights, I felt very strongly about giving the production the representation, diversity, identity and authenticity that it deserves. With permission from the publishers / performance rights holders we engaged a cast of actors that align with the principal Latinx characters, who whilst not Latinx per se, they are of Māori and/or Pasifika descent (and other POC*) who come from minority communities and are familiar with the challenges and the joys of being raised in an environment steeped in culture and tradition. These actors seldom get the chance to play well-rounded leading roles in traditional and contemporary musical theatre. Lin-Manuel Miranda has changed the landscape in this regard - in both this musical and the more recent groundbreaking musical Hamilton, where the immigrant characters exclaim “tomorrow there’ll be more of us…”
